These days, homeowners are relying more and more on home improvement apps to take their DIY skills to the next level. As it happens, there are lots of apps that will help you pick out paint colors, trim, doors — you can even use mobile apps to design a deck or create a 3D rendering of your home. These apps put the decision making process firmly in the hands of homeowners and buyers. Even builders and remodelers are finding these tools helpful, not only as a source of inspiration for their projects, but as a handy way to communicate with homeowners. With a few taps, a homeowner can show the builder or buyer exactly what kind of windows, doors, paint, siding and trim they want.
A great many of these home improvement apps are designed by material suppliers, which means that as a homeowner, you’ll be able to play with the exact products that are available. Most of these apps are on Apple’s iTunes store, but there are a couple available for Android users.
1. DoorWays from Therma-Tru
This app is designed to help you choose the right doors for your home. Not only can you choose between door styles, but you can also choose which glass inserts you like best. Additionally, you can use your device’s camera to test various door styles on your home. DoorWays is available on both the iTunes App Store and Google Play. Click here for download links.
2. CurbAppeal from CertainTeed
Here is an app that lets you experiment with a variety of details. CurbAppeal lets you place different styles of roofing, siding, doors, shutters, decking and more on a model home. It even allows you to choose colors from a large palette, making this a truly customizable experience. This is the perfect tool to help you decide which exterior colors and materials you like best. CurbAppeal is available on the iTunes App Store.
3. Deck Visualizer and Deck Designer from Trex
Trex brings us two home improvement apps. The first is the Trex Deck Visualizer. One part of this app gives you access to the Trex catalog, allowing you to mix and match deck colors and styles — including fascia colors and other details. The second component of this app is the railing visualizer, which lets you view the different types of railings against different backdrops to get an idea of what your view will look like once the deck railing is installed. The Trex Deck Visualizer is available for iPad only.
The Trex Deck Designer is a bit more robust. In this app, you can actually build your own deck using a wide range of materials and design elements. The app even generates a materials list as you are designing. Trex Deck Designer is available here for iPad and here for Android.
4. Exterior from Valspar
Exterior (available iOS here) is unique in that you can use your device’s camera to create a 3D rendition of your own home. Once complete, you can experiment with siding colors, window colors and styles, soffit, fascia, trim and shutters. This fun tool helps you to visualize the exterior of your home once real-life updates are completed.
These home improvement apps and others will help you design and plan, and they’ll help you make sure that your builder knows exactly what you want!
